The History of St Valentine’s Day

The historic legend of St. Valentine’s Day is thought to date back to the Roman Empire when in 250 AD the roman emperor Claudius the second decided that to make single men better soldiers he would outlaw marriage for them.
A priest called Valentine heard about the ban, and took pity of the soldiers and decided to help them by taking matters into his own hands and marry young soldiers and their lovers in secret.

Unfortunately Emperor Claudius the second discovered what Valentine was doing and threw him in the dungeons. It is told that while in prison Valentine fell in love with a young blind girl who was the daughter of one of his jailers. Prior to his execution Valentine allegedly wrote a love letter to his young love and signed it "From your Valentine"
